The name ombra (shade) comes from an old Venetian trader's habit of placing his barrels of wine under the shade of Piazza San Marco's bell tower so as to keep the wine cool.
It thus became popular to say "andare all'ombra" - to go for a glass of wine or two. Venetians would have a cicchetto - a small bite, to accompany their glass of wine.
Today, as in times gone by, the tradition continues and innovates.

This warm and cosy bacaro area in Restaurant La Cusina seats 14 and is dedicated to sharing with you one of Venice's much loved customs - andando a cichetti e ombre or, andando a bacari.
At la Chic..chetteria you'll experience informal bacaro-style dining with Executive Chef Alberto Fol's personal selection of cicchetti - both traditional and reinvented, paired with an ombre or two, or three... selected by our master sommeliers. In addition, you'll be rewarded with Restaurant La Cusina's views of Venice.
